These data are a combination of official statistical data, data collected from internet resources, and community challenges and resources identified through observation and ethnographic interviews, categorized using Dr. Whitehead's Ethnographically Informed Community and Cultural Assessment Research Systems. The current research interest area is within the Baltimore-Washington Urban Corridor, with specific focus on the area referred to by Whitehead as the "Capital Black Belt," an area encompassing the eastern portion of the Distict of Columbia and the neighboring communities in Prince George's County, Maryland, where the population is, in many cases, greater than 90% African American, as illustrated in the map below. These communities often have higher rates of poverty, incarceration, and disparate health outcomes compared to other parts of the Washington metropolitan area.
